Richland Raiders Hold Off Denison in 26–21 District Battle 2026_09_10

PROSPER, Texas — The Richland Raiders continued the impressive start to their inaugural varsity football season Thursday night, defeating the Denison Yellow Jackets 26–21 at Children’s Health Stadium in Prosper.
In a matchup that tested Richland from start to finish, the Raiders showed they could do more than simply put points on the scoreboard. They showed they could respond under pressure and finish a close football game.
Denison struck first, taking a 7–0 advantage, but Richland responded in a big way during the second quarter. The Raiders exploded for 20 unanswered points, turning an early deficit into a 20–7 halftime lead.
The Yellow Jackets refused to go away.
Denison came out of halftime with renewed energy and scored 14 points in the third quarter, putting pressure on the young Richland program. The Raiders added six points of their own in the quarter, setting up a tense fourth period with Richland holding a 26–21 advantage.
From there, the game became about finishing.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, and Richland's defense protected the five-point lead to secure the 26–21 victory.
For a program still establishing its identity, the win represented another important step forward. Richland improved to 3–0, continuing an impressive opening stretch that has quickly put the Raiders on the North Texas high school football radar.
The Raiders entered the matchup after opening the season with a thrilling 56–49 victory over Aubrey before following it with another offensive showcase, defeating Frisco Heritage 56–37. Against Denison, however, Richland had to win a different type of game.
Instead of another shootout, the Raiders were forced to protect a narrow lead, make defensive stops and execute with the game hanging in the balance.
That ability to respond could prove valuable as the schedule gets tougher.
Denison provided Richland with a physical early-season test and demonstrated why the Yellow Jackets remain a program capable of making opponents work for four quarters. Their 14-point third quarter brought them back into the game, but Richland's defense ultimately delivered when it mattered most.
Three games into the season, Richland remains unbeaten.
More importantly, the Raiders continue to show signs of a program developing confidence and an identity of its own.
The road ahead gets even tougher as Richland prepares for a matchup with Celina, one of Texas high school football's most established programs. But after surviving its first tight district battle, Richland will enter that challenge with something every young program wants to build early — momentum.
